New Zealand Supporters Put Best Foot Forward For Targeting Cancer!
Targeting Cancer wishes its New Zealand supporters well as they prepare to tackle the forthcoming Ports of Auckland Round the Bays run and help raise awareness of radiation therapy as a cancer treatment!
A 40-strong group including Radiation Oncologists, Radiation Therapists, Medical Physicists and their friends and family are participating in the 8.4km event.
As well as enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Auckland CBD-St Heliers Bay circuit, the group will wear Targeting Cancer t-shirts to help promote the campaign.
Dr Christine Elder, a radiation oncologist from the Auckland City Hospital, said she couldn’t wait to take part in the March 3 event.
“The intervention rates for radiation therapy are not as high as they should be, particularly in some areas of New Zealand,” Dr Elder said. “This means that people who would benefit from radiation therapy are not receiving it.
“This may be due to many factors but it is always good if more people know that they, or their loved ones, may benefit from radiotherapy.
“Aside from team building within our staff, I do hope that we start to make more people aware that radiation therapy is a great option for patients with cancer, and that about half of the patients diagnosed with cancer would benefit from it at some point in their illness.
“Anything we can do raise the profile of radiation oncology in New Zealand is terrific – and we’re looking forward to wonderful exercise as well.”
