MRI-Linac Research at the Ingham Institute

07 Oct 2014

There is exciting research in radiation therapy being undertaken at the Ingham Institute and Liverpool Hospital in Australia – the development of an MRI-Linac.

A new MRI-Linac will combine an MRI scanner with a Linear Accelerator for research into cancer therapy and treatment. This will be one of only three in the world.

Radiation therapy aims to precisely target the cancerous cells while sparing the surrounding organs and healthy tissue. However, organs can move or change shape during treatment, for example when the patient breathes.

By combining an MRI with a Linac accelerator the MRI-Linac system will enable a super-charged view of the tumour to ensure more precise and accurate treatment for cancer patients.
